The River Creed System

The Creed system drains about 42km2 of peat moorland entering the Minch just south of Stornoway. It is a renowned salmon and sea trout fishery, which has been managed by the Stornoway Angling Association since 2001. Catches have improved since then reflecting the active management of the fishery by the association.

The fishery consists of the lower 4 miles of the river, both banks, where there are 20 named pools, and fishing on 2 lochs. Unusually for the Western Isles there is extensive fishing on the river where there are numerous holding pools as well as other runs where fish can be caught during high water. The association has boats on 2 lochs, Chlachain (2) and Ois (1). Fishing on the lochs can be very productive during the right weather conditions.

The season runs from 1st June to the 15th Oct, with July, August and September normally the most productive months. The quality of the fishing on the river is very much dependant on sufficient rainfall to raise the river level, whilst on the lochs it is dependant on the strength and direction of the wind, with a strong W/SW wind providing the best conditions.

Day and evening tickets are available at all times for both the river and the lochs and can be obtained from several outlets in and around Stornoway.

Access to most areas the fishery is easy as a number of roads cross the catchment with the river below Loch Chlachain is the only area where a walk of more than a mile is required. Although it is an association fishery it is always possible to find a quiet stretch, especially during weekdays.
The most productive pool, The Bend Pool, is situated within the picturesque amenity woodland called the Castle Grounds. Also within an easy walk of the main road are the Peat Stack and Dam Pools, where many big fish have been caught over the years. Although the majority of the run consists of grilse there are invariably a few multi sea winter fish caught each year, with the best fish in recent years one of 19lbs landed in 1991.

In recent years the sea trout catch has been increasing dramatically, with the 2003 catch of 335, bettered only 19 times since records began in 1874.
