Season so Far

Season Update Cold- that best sums up the season so far. Although most anglers venturing onto association lochs have had some success, the weather has been the major talking point. Cold, wet northerly winds have dominated the weather making fishing most days rather unpleasant. The weather is now warming up a little and there are now plenty of flies about.(instead of hailstones!).Prospects for brown trout on association lochs over the coming weeks are good as the lochs have been lightly fished this spring and the trout should now be getting more active with the water temperature rising at last. The competions held so far have suffered from the weather with the Obbe Competition giving poorer returns than normal due to the unseasonably cold weather. This was unfortunate because given decent weather then the Obbe is a fishery capable of producing good numbers of specimen brown trout. Thanks again to Tom Jourdan for allowing us access to the Obbe Fishery. Calum Stewart won the Jamieson Cup with three trout for 1lb 6 oz. The first leg of the Poachers Shield was held in North Uist this year with the home team coming out well on top. Results from the weigh in were as follows; North Uist AC---109oz Stornoway AA--61oz South Uist AC--46oz Association Secretary Alex Maclean blamed our poor return on the famous Uist hospitality getting the better of two team members the night before.Excuses....... Well done NUAC but all is still to play for on the second leg on Vochmid later in the season. The River Creed has now opened and hopes are high for another successful season.Salmon were seen running the river in early April and with constant high water this Spring there will be a few salmon spread right through the system. The first grilse usually appear on the next spring tides with a steady run of salmon and sea trout from then on.Sea trout are now showing around the coast and at the mouth of the Creed-some will have run the river but over the last two years the timing of the sea trout runs has been impossible to predict. The River Creed Enhancement Plan is well under way with access to both lochs and the lower river much improved. Bailliff patrols are now under way and although we have not seen any netting taking place- which is good- we have been seeing large numbers of very good sized sea trout showing in Broad Bay.So if there is no water in the Creed, a visit to either Gress or the Laxdale River estuary could be very rewarding. I watched anglers taking sea trout at Tong on both spinners and fly this afternoon- with most fish being returned.
