Fishing Update

River Creed

In early August there was a rise in water level which allowed the salmon that were waiting in the sea to enter the system. Several hundred fish ran the river over three days which was great to watch. The fish spread themselves out right through the system and some decent catches were made. The river never rose to a good fly fishing level. Therefore, the worm and spinner fishers took a higher percentage of the catch than normal. The rise in water was short lived and the drought returned until the last week of the month when there was another moderate rise in levels. This encouraged some fresh fish to enter the system and stirred up the resident fish. Good catches were made with Loch Clachan fishing very well. If there is a decent flood then there will be some very good fishing on the Creed river for the remainder of the season. Alas, the current forecast predicts a continuation of the dry spell.

I would like to remind anglers that from 15 Sept the Creed system is catch and release. Anglers should look at the size and number of hooks on their lures as large trebles can inflict considerable damage to fish.

Loch Langavat

Although the boats were not used as often as they were in July some good catches were made when conditions were right. One party had five salmon to 10lbs to their boat over two days. There appears to be a very good stock of salmon in Loch Langavat and if the boats are well used between now and the end of the season the Association should record their best return since the Association started fishing the loch.

Loch Fhir Mhaoil

September and October are normally the best months on this loch so I would encourage Association members to try fishing the loch.

Trout Fishing

Most anglers on the island seem to forget the brown trout fishing once migratory fish run in July. However, there are anglers who prefer brown trout fishing and this year they have done very well. All the Association waters fished well for brown trout in August. As September is normally a good month for brown trout, with better fish showing, then targetting brown trout may be an option worth considering if the migratory fish are not cooperating.
