Fishing Report 29/06/08

Apologies for the lack of updates this month. This was because the Creed, and other fisheries on the island, were bone dry and there was nothing to report.

The long drought will have an effect on the number of returing fish from 2009-2011 but hopefully enough fish have survived the dry spell to restock the rivers.

Enough doom and gloom. The good news is that it rained sufficiently last weekend to allow the huge numbers of sea trout that were in Stornoway harbour to enter the river. Thy will now be in the lochs. There were some salmon and grilse waiting in the sea and they will now be in the Creed system. Most early (up until mid July) salmon returns on the Creed are from the lochs although some are taken from the river.

On Wednesday night the Creed rose into a full spate which has flushed the accumulated weed and algae out of the system. The river was running very dirty on Thursday and Friday but by Saturday had started to clear. It came as no surprise when Donnie Sinclair reported the first Creed salmon of the season on Saturday. The fish ,5lbs 8oz, came out of Regis Pool.

The prospects of contacting a salmon on the Creed over the next week are very good with the chance of intercepting a fish anywhere from Clachan to the Matheson Pool. Grimersta also had a good rise in water levels last week and the chances of a salmon from the Association boats on Langavat are excellent.
