Rain at Last

The long drought finally broke on Friday 29 June with a moderate rise. This was followed by a decent summer spate on Sunday night. Unfortunately both Saturday and Tuesday were both very sunny with light East winds so there are no reports of salmon hooked. Salmon have been seen at the river mouth and in the lower river. There was a good build up of sea trout in Stornoway harbour and these fish will now have run the river. I have noticed that those early (for the Creed) fish run hard for Clachan and it is here, given a bit of cloud and wind, that there is the best chance of sport over the next two weeks or so. It is then that the river starts to outfish the lochs. Unfortunately angling effort so far has been concentrated in the lower river so it is no real surprise no salmon were taken , although a visitor had a 1.5lb sea trout from the Matheson pool today. There are quite a few anglers on the system today so it is possible fish may still be taken. This rain has come at just the right time as we now have enough water stored to ensure easy passage from the sea for migratory fish for at least the whole of July.
