Spawning Report 2006

River Creed Spawning Report 2006 Redd counts were carried out between 24 December and 31 December when light and water levels allowed. River Creed Salmon Redd Counts 2001-2006 Area 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 Upstream of Ois 32 28 43 65 181 122 Ois to Chlachain 13 16 18 16 36 17 Allt Ruadh 0 0 7 15 26 17 Below Chlachain 59 75 85 109 164 138 Soluis 0 0 0 7 26 13 Total 104 122 153 221 433 307 The salmon redd count was satisfactory over the whole catchment with all areas of spawning gravel well used. The benefit of having stable gravel in the system was demonstrated by the low number redds that were washed away during the very high water that prevailed during the spawning season. In the smaller spawning burns, the salmon redds are well spread out which should mean less competition between hatched fry. However, in the main river below Chlachain the salmon spawning activity is concentrated in four small areas. This is not ideal and gravel cleaning efforts should be directed to areas of the main river where little or no salmon spawning takes place. It was difficult to make an assessment of trout spawning activity due to the very high water levels. But from observation, it appears that fewer trout spawned in some areas, and the size of the trout was smaller. Apologies for the above.........tables dont seem to paste very well! But it can be seen that we were proved correct in that there were plenty salmon in the river. If we had decent fishing conditions then we would have had a good year. We can only hope that this year gives better water levels.
